Poker Chip Sets – The Poker Chip and Challenge to Counterfeiters

Poker is a popular card casino games across the world with the excitement of gambling and potential for huge payoffs. Almost integral to the poker game are the poker chips
and indeed poker does not feel like poker without poker chip sets.

The chips are small discs of various colors representing different denominations
meant as substitutes for real money
which is instead stored in a more secure place. The use of money substitutes
or token money
can be traced back through the 13th to 17th centuries in Europe. Today poker chips are often made according to themes and formats that unite a particular set of chips. This is useful in avoiding counterfeiters
even for games at home or in private.

casino chips use many different anti-counterfeiting measures
with the most basic being chip coloration and embossed or molded patterning. Holographic inlays
distinctive colored markings on the edges and ultraviolet markings on the inlays further deter potential counterfeiters. Lastly
Radio Frequency Identification or RFID tags are used by some establishments. The latter method can be quite costly
but the establishments that use them feel the cost is justified. Given the difficulty in counterfeiting chips
poker chip frauds in casinos are rare.

If you plan to play in private though
you should be careful of frauds
especially if you are using mass-produced chips. Another reason for these security measures is to identify which casinos they came from. This is usually not a problem
since casinos usually honor only their own chips and it is more of a matter of branding. In Nevada however
casinos are permitted to honor chips from other casinos
and these identifiers make returning chips to the casinos they belong to easier.

Poker Chip Sets – Composition and Coloration

Authentic casino poker chips are made of clay
though not pure clay which is too soft. Special composite mixtures have been made
using trade-secret techniques
the confidential nature of which is yet another speed bump on the counterfeiter’s path. Sometimes
special edition poker chip sets may be bought from casinos
though generally poker chips stay in the casinos. Poker chips made for home use on the other hand may or may not be of the same quality as their casino counterparts.

For home use poker chips
ceramic and ABS plastic are the most common materials. When ceramic is used
special compositions allow them to approximate the feel of real clay while maintaining a lower price profile. Ceramic chips are also used in some casino. ABS plastic chips on the other hand may be molded with a metal disk or slug inside
to give them some heft. For those in Europe
poker chips may come in mother of pearl
which gives them an incomparable sheen and luster. Coloration is standard for different denominations in one set
but may differ across sets. For example
in some places there are standard coloration schemes for chips
while in others there are none. Of note is the US State of Nevada
where casinos are given free rein on their chip designs and colors.

Poker Chip Sets – Sets and Themes

Since poker games often involve large amounts of money
a large number of chips are needed. Standard sets have 300 pieces
while others can have 500 pieces
and yet others reaching a stunning 1000 pieces. Some casinos sell poker chips similar to those used on the floor but with a few differences for identification purposes. This is great for those who want to emulate the feel of their favorite places of gambling at home games. Limited edition sets can be highly collectible
and there is a thriving community of poker chip collectors.

Many of the poker chips are traded via eBay
and the most special ones can go for thousands of US dollars
regardless of face value. Whole sets of these special poker ch
ips can cost even more than the individual pieces. What really ties the members of all poker chip sets together is the design of the chips. Poker chips in one set are often of identical sizes
of consistent coloration
and having similar inlays. Colors and inlays vary according to denomination
but the idea is that chips from one set are identifiably from the very same set.

The edges and rims may also be embossed with characteristic patterns and even have colored sections made via special multi stage molding techniques. The designs may be simple and straight forward
just simple chips with numbers. They could just as well be whimsical
like having humorous or otherwise interesting prints on the inlays. A set of poker chips will often be packaged in a poker chip case or some such container such as an acrylic poker chip carrier or humidor style wooden poker chip case
in the tradition followed in casinos worldwide. One would suppose that if you are going for the authentic feel
then there’s no point skimping on the little details.

Poker Chip Sets – Elements of Authenticity

Poker chips are essential to playing poker. One can “play” poker without them
but it will not feel like poker without the chips would it? It is the feel of these poker chips that gives a tactile sense of authenticity. The clink of these poker chips as they hit the table and trade hands adds to the ambiance. The nature of these poker chips ensures that no one can weasel out of the bet that they placed
so it ensures a fair game as far as bets are concerned. Speaking of amounts
the printed or inlaid values may vary depending on where you buy your poker chip sets.

It is even possible to find manufacturers that make poker chips that reflect your country’s currency and useful denominations
though generic chips are also available. With the popularity of televised poker and TV series set in casinos
the mystique of poker chip sets has increased
and many people feel that poker chips are the only way with which to play poker. If you are the kind of person who likes taking souvenirs
then chips from the casinos you have visited make fine reminders of good and bad times alike. Poker chips are definitely the elements of authenticity in Poker Strategy games.

-

Poker Pros Play Live and Online
Poker played at online poker sites is the way that many professional poker players are playing poker today but it is not the only way. Professional poker players still choose to play at regular land based casinos for their poker action. Some players even do both. Is the game played the same online as it is in local cardrooms?

At the top of the broadcast, just three players remained from the 189-player field, each competing for their share of a $1,778,550 prize pool, with their eyes firmly fixed on the $449,910 first-place prize. In Part I, the early stages of the tournament were highlighted while the first final-table casualty occurred, which happened to be Eli Berg. In Part II, two more eliminations occurred. On the 13th hand of the final table, Steven Brackesy opened for 37,000 with and received a call from Daniel Santoro who was holding . Christian Harder then three-bet to 127,000 holding on the button and then Andy Frankenberger moved all in for 354,000 with from the big blind. Both Brackesy and Santoro quickly got out of the way, and Harder insta-called. Frankenberger was the reigning WPT Player of the Year, but a second WPT eluded him as the board ran out and he was eliminated in fifth place for $99,585. Likewise, Brackesy met his end when he got all in preflop holding only to run into Santoros . Brackesy failed to find any help as the board ran out and he hit the rail in fourth place for $129,816. Heres how things stacked up at the start of the final table: WPT Foxwoods World Poker Finals Final Table Seat Player Chips 1 -Empty- 2 Daniel Santoro 3,282,000 3 Christian Harder 1,537,000 4 Bob Carbone 901,000 5 -Empty- 6 -Empty- First Hand: With the blinds at 15,000/30,000 and a 5,000 ante, Harder opened for 65,000 from the button with . Bob Carbone looked down at in the small blind and opted to move all in, prompting Santoro to fold in the big blind. Harder considered his options, flexed his fingers, and then gave up on the hand. Bob Carbone Eliminated in Third Place: With on the button, Santoro made it 60,000 to go. This guys the best, Carbone said from the big blind as he squeezed out . Im all in. Call, Santoro snapped and rolled over his hand. Both players were on their feet and Carbone seemed to know his fate was sealed. The crowd was calling for various cards, each rail supporting their man, but the dull flop quieted things down. The turn was of no consequence, and neither was the river. Carbone, who got into the tournament via a $250 satellite, was eliminated in third place for $166,271. I learned tonight that these kids are real good poker players, theyre grinders, thats for sure, Carbone told Matt Savage in his post-elimination interview. I hope to be back again someday, this was a great, great experience. The Raw Deal: In the latest edition of The Raw Deal, Tony Dunst took the opportunity to preview the upcoming heads-up match. He believed that both men no doubt hoped to face off against Carbone, the lone amateur remaining in the field, but his elimination made that impossible. Instead, the two were destined to face one another. As Dunst pointed out, both Santoro and Harder were just a year apart and had plenty of online experience; furthermore, any advantage Santoro had with the chip lead was equalized by Harders bevy of experience in the live realm. Its a tricky game playing someone that you believe is thinking about the same concepts and strategic concerns that you are, Dunst pointed out before explaining that he expects both players to have an exploitable, balance approach, while pursuing similar betting lines and patterns. First Hand of Heads-Up Play: With the blinds at 25,000/50,000 and a 5,000 ante, Harder was facing an uphill battle with his 1,305,000 stack going up against Santoros 4,415,000. In the first hand between the two, the latter opened for 100,000 with and was called by Harder who was holding . Both players proceeded to check the flop before the peeled off on the turn. Harder led out for 115,000, Santoro raised to 235,000, Harder called and the appeared on the river. Harder checked, Santoro took a stab at the pot with a bet of 400,000, and Harder released his hand. Double Trouble: Harder was first to act and raised to 100,000 with , which prompted Santoro to move all in with the inferior . Harder made the call and was a 67 percent favorite to double on the hand, which increased to 95 percent when the flop came down a favorable . The turn left Santoro drawing dead, and after the meaningless was put out on the river, Harder doubled to 1.7 million. Harder Takes the Lead: In the next hand shown, Santoro opened for 100,000 with and was called by Harder who was holding . The flop saw both players check, leading to the turn. Harder checked the nut straight, opening the door for Santoro to bet 100,000 with his pair of jacks. Harder then raised to 310,000, Santoro called, and the hit the river. Harder wasted little time in firing out 490,000 and Santoro looked perplexed. He thought long and hard before saying, Here you go, and putting in the call. With that, Harder took the chip lead. Another Double for Harder: After battling back into the chip lead, Santoro opened on the button for 160,000 with only to run into the of Harder. The latter came in with a raise to 400,000, Santoro called and the flop came down . Harder picked up the nut-flush draw and led out for 340,000, which Santoro raised by moving all in. Harder made a quick call and was an 83 percent favorite to double on the hand. Neither the turn nor helped Santoro and Harder doubled to 3.96 million on the hand. Santoros Turn to Double: After the blinds went up to 40,000/80,000 with a 10,000 ante, Santoro opened for 160,000 with . Harder looked down at and moved all in, which Santoro called. It was a classic race and both players were on their feet. Much to Santoros delight, the board ran out and he doubled back into the chip lead. And the Winner Is: In the final hand of the tournament, Harder opened for 160,000 and was met with a three-bet to 425,000 by Santoro. Harder responded by moving all in 2.41 million and Santoro snap-called. Showdown It was another classic flip, and Santoro could clinch victory if he could improve. He couldnt do it on the flop, nor the turn, but the spiked on the river to give him the win. Unbelievable heartbreak for Christian Harder, Mike Sexton said as the crowd reacted in disbelief. It was a coinflip, so I wasnt way ahead or anything, Harder said in his post-elimination interview. Its obviously frustrating to lose heads up in a big tournament, but I mean I ran pretty well early in the heads-up match and he won two flips to end it. It happens.

A Year Later: A Small Stakes Player Reflects on Black Friday
April 17 2012, Pawel Nazarewicz Related Articles Commonwealth of Kentucky Files Claim for Indicted Online Poker Domains Civil Forfeiture Claim Deadline Looms for Online Poker Players Plans for Intrastate Online Poker in Washington, D.C. Share It Tags Black Friday, Gambling legislation, Pawel Nazarewicz, Online Poker, Poker Players Alliance, Full Tilt Poker, PokerStars Print Pawel “Verneer” Nazarewicz is a CardRunners pro specializing at micro- and low-stakes no-limit hold’em. He is the author of a new book called “Building a Bankroll,” which details and analyzes his experience of starting with a small bankroll and then moving up in stakes. Sections from the book and more info about the author is available at mtmicropoker.com. I remember waking up, going to my computer, and starting my morning routine. First, I look at CNN.com and see if anything major has happened on the news. Nope. Then I check the sport scores from last night on ESPN.com. I look at my email and check out if the games are good at the stakes and site that I usually play at. If they are, I normally put in a short morning session before breakfast. That morning, I remember seeing a message on Skype. My friend Brian Rue simply wrote, Did you see the news? I had no idea what he was talking about. I quickly looked at CNN.com and didnt see anything out of the ordinary. Clearly he wasnt talking about major national or international news like the tragic earthquake and tsunami disaster that hit Japan a month earlier. Something like that would be all over the news. Nope. Whats up? I replied.Go to FullTiltPoker.com, he said. When I typed it in, I was greeted with a now all-too-familiar image: PokerStars.com had a similar looking site. I instantly hit up PokerNews and TwoPlusTwo.com to get more info. There wasnt much. I texted one of my friends in who is more plugged into the heart of the poker industry. Is the sky falling? I asked. No people are overreacting like they always do, he replied. In retrospect, they werent, but at the time we hardly knew a fraction of what we know now. For the next few weeks, I pretty much stayed glued to PokerNews, TwoPlusTwo, and Twitter. I think Black Friday was a time when I really started both following and tweeting on a regular basis. I was hungry for any bit of news available. I wasnt the only one. To the right is a graph from Alexa.com of the traffic on PokerNews for the last two years: There were three major issues that I was concerned with immediately in the wake of Black Friday and Im going to give my current thoughts on them a year later. How long will this last? How and when will I get my money off the sites? Where can I play now? How Long Will This Last? There was already a lot of talk in the community about the necessity of formal federal legislation. Senate Majority Leader and Democratic Senator from Nevada Harry Reid even proposed a piece of legislation would include a 12-18 month blackout period of no online poker that he planned to submit to Congress in December 2010. The purpose of this was to let U.S.-based casinos try to enter the market on a more competitive footing with the major companies like PokerStars, FullTilt, and PartyPoker. American players in the forums first complained, but then realized it was necessary and most accepted it. This would have given us plenty of warning to get our affairs in order. Black Friday, on the other hand, felt like a complete sucker punch. It was what Nassim Nicholas Taleb calls a Black Swan Event high impact, hard to predict, and beyond the scope of expectation. No one saw it coming, and the impact was catastrophic. It was our metaphorical 9/11. Now, a year later, I still have no idea how long it will be before I can confidently play online again. I currently have some money on the Merge Network, but for reasons I will discuss later, I cannot plan to play professionally there. As for legislation, all the momentum seems to be behind poker legislation: The U.S. economy, while showing signs of recovery, is currently coming out of a recession. Due to our high national debt and high unemployment, there is a major push from politicians to cut spending and grow revenue. Online poker is a multibillion dollar industry that would create jobs and provide revenue both on the federal and state levels. The key piece of federal legislation in the U.S. Congress (HR 2366 introduced by Republican Joe Barton from Texas) was passed out of committee with bi-partisan support. At the same time, New Jersey, California, Nevada, and Delaware all have state-level legislation to allow online poker. Support for these also appears to be bipartisan. Unfortunately, 2012 is an election year, which traditionally, are not conducive to major legislative action. Neither the republicans nor democrats want to touch anything that can be used against them. Even though the stigma behind poker as a moral hazard has faded in the last decade, scandals like the ones with Ultimate Bet and Full Tilt are still fresh in the publics mind and thus complicate the issue. Still, the money involved in the industry seems too big to keep off the table, and once the 2012 election is over, I expect legislative progress. In summary, I dont expect legislation to pass this year, but online poker legalization in the next 18 to 24 months seems inevitable. How And When Will I Get My Money Off The Sites? Both Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars quickly reassured players that their funds were safe. Because I loved playing the Rush games, most of my volume was on Full Tilt Poker. In fact, I started 2011 with $200 in my account with the goal of grinding it up to a five-figure bankroll. I accomplished my goal on April 13, but the joy of reaching it lasted less than 48 hours. PokerStars paid out American players in less than three weeks. This seemed like a good sign. As we know now, unlike PokerStars, Full Tilt didnt separate player funds from general funds. Its licensing didnt mandate it. Thus, once the U.S. Department of Justice froze the funds of American players, Full Tilt no longer had the necessary capital to continue operating. At the time, I didnt consider the possibility of such an event, and, to be fair, neither did most people. Even those very close to the source like Tom durrrr Dwan and Phil Galfond famously reassured others on Twitter that if everyone didnt get paid, both would put up $1,000,000 to be split among those who had money on Full Tilt Poker. Phil Ivey sat out the whole 2011 WSOP due to the scandal, stating that he didnt believe it was right for him to play while so many people have money tied up on the site. Since then, news of him and other pros owing Full Tilt millions of dollars has come out. In September 2011, the French investment firm Groupe Bernard Tapie said it would purchase Full Tilt and all its assets. News on that front has been an emotional roller coaster for many players. As of the writing of this article, GBT has begun hiring customer service representatives for FTP, which seems promising, but like many players, Im tired of getting my hopes up only to hear more bad news. The whole situation is a major mess, but the bottom line is that this scandal has done major damage to the image of the online poker industry, regardless of whether players end up getting paid or not. Where Can I Play Now? An exodus of young, single, high-stakes players quickly started. A few of my friends from CardRunners set up residence in Canada and were able to play again fairly quickly. For the majority of American pros, moving out of the country just to play poker was not, and is not an option. To the casual and recreational players, it definitely isnt. Some have started playing more live poker, but live poker is only available in roughly half of the states. Can you name them all? Live poker is also much more of a hassle you need to go to the casino, wait to be seated, and then, the dynamics of live play are completely different. Live poker is the antithesis of Rush or Zoom poker, which I was able to start and end instantly. The final option was playing at one of the few poker rooms still open to American players. In the weeks following Black Friday, I did a lot of research and narrowed my options down to Merge, Cake, and Bodog. I deposited a few hundred dollars on the Merge Network because it offered the best software and deposit bonuses at the time. Both Cake Poker and Bodog had issues with Hold’em Manager and seemed the more difficult to navigate. The interface on Merge was most similar to what I was used to on Full Tilt and PokerStars. The biggest concern I had, and continue to have about Merge is whether the U.S. Department of Justice will shut them down at some point, as well. Currently, I have no idea, but I am going on the assumption that its a real possibility and thus planning accordingly. This means I dont keep any more money on -there than I am willing to lose (once burned, twice shy, right?), and recommend that most people do the same. Many players share my concerns. Additionally, early cash-outs would take six weeks to go through and you could only initiate one cash-out at a time. This didnt add to the confidence of the players. Still, as Johnny Cash might say, Merge seems like the cleanest dirty shirt at the moment. All this has made online games available to me, particularly at the micro stakes, much tougher than they have been in the past. There are two main reasons for this: the Americans currently playing online seem to be of the more informed and serious variety, and they are playing with smaller bankrolls and thus at lower levels than they have in the past. Most of the Americans playing on Merge are more serious about online poker because they have gone out of their way to get an account and because they dont want to deposit too much money and have it be frozen, are forced to play on shorter bankrolls and start at lower limits than they have done before. This means that across the board, the games have more tough regulars and fewer weak recreational players. It kind of parallels the early days of live poker that Doyle Brunson used to talk about lots of uncertainty, short bankrolls and few games that are mostly filled with players that have to have their poker fix. Looking Ahead I think this is a great time to work on improving your game and keeping it fresh. Personally, Ive started playing micro-stakes pot-limit Omaha and thinking a lot about the differences between that and no-limit hold’em. Ive also taken the time to write a book about my experiences of starting with small deposits and building five-figure bankrolls (which I did in both 2010 and 2011). The book, appropriately named Building a Bankroll, would probably never have been written if Black Friday didnt happen most of my poker-related time would have been spent grinding and working on my own game. So I recommend depositing a small amount and really fine-tuning your game (or learning a new one like I am trying to do). Read a lot, practice, and reflect on the experience. Once online poker comes back, which it will, all the practice and work you put in now will pay off. You will be sharper and smarter than those that chose to sit this one out. At the same time, you can help the legislative momentum by reaching out to your congressmen and letting them know you support online poker. The Poker Players Alliance, a nonprofit advocacy group promoting poker players rights, has made this really easy. Just go to theppa.org and click on their Contact Congress banner. Filling in some basic info will take less than five minutes and you will make your voice heard. Its been a very frustrating year, but I look forward to brighter days ahead.

Bodog Poker to Move into Asian Market
Bodog Poker has recently announced via a press release that the company has plans to forge ahead and move into the Asian markets. Online poker and other online casino games have recently become more and more popular in the Asian market. Last year, the Bodog Network was launched. Since the launch of the Bodog Network, the company has been operating using a new style and it is believed that this could change the way that the poker market operates. The change has come in the form of the Recreational Poker Model, which attracts different players to the poker tables. This move has affected the wider online poker community, with many online poker sites changing how they structure the rakeback. Microgaming has made some changes, offering its players more chances to play anonymously, and has added more anonymous Heads Up poker tables. Poker Stars has recently introduced Zoom Poker, which is a poker game that is more friendly to the casual online poker player. The more casual player-friendly model that has been adopted by the Bodog Poker Network will be used as the company eases its way into the Asian market, with the company entering the market as Bodog88. Adding Bodog88 to the Network will not only give us increased liquidity but also a chance to market our product to a new audience who havent been clouded by those looking to protect the existing status quo of the few taking from the many, said the Vice President of the Bodog Poker Network, Jonas Odman. Bodog88s Managing Director, Robert Gustafsson, had the following to say: Poker is still in its infancy in Asia but the Bodog product is totally in line with how Asian players think: Trust is vital. This is why they only use Live Dealer casinos over the more common RNG casino in Europe. I can see anonymous tables making a similar impact over here.

CelebPoker Package Winner Achieves Ambition
CelebPoker Package Winner UK CelebPoker player Matthew Tranter took the next step in his poker career by winning a package to the Irish Winter Festival that took place from October 29th 31st, 2011. As a loyal player of CelebPoker, Matt will be aiming for more package wins in our online satellites for land based poker tournaments. We caught up with himto find out a bit more. What do you do (occupation, studies, hobbies etc?)I have been making a living by playing poker for the last couple of years. Prior to this I studied software development. I greatly enjoy skiing, socializing, reading and a wide variety of music; primarily drum & bass and dubstep which I find very helpful as a driving force during long poker sessions. How long have you been playing poker and how did you start?I have been playing poker for 5 years. Poker first caught my attention when some of the better players started to move over from the real time strategy game “Starcraft” that I was playing competitively at the time, they all showed great results and this opened my mind to the advantage of investing my time and dedication into a more profitable venture. Televised poker also added to the appeal to get involved in this exciting game; seeing the pros at the time playing high stakes tournaments for millions of dollars helped fuel my desire to learn and hopefully one day compete with and defeat these great players. Did you use any special strategy to win the tournament?I vary my play style based on the players on my tables at the time. On some tables it is advantageous to play tight (only the best hands) and some loose (many hands), however either way I will try to play those hands aggressively making my opponents make tough decisions whilst giving me information about the strength of their hands. In this tournament I was able to play a loose aggressive style (this means i was playing a lot of hands whilst betting/raising/re-raising rather than calling) and had a very large stack going into the final table.A tight player will make it into the money positions in a tournament more than a loose player, however a loose player will go on the win much bigger prizes more often when they do make the money. Any key moments you remember from tournament? The final table is the most important part of the tournament, with the pay increasing steeply with each extra position gained; here outplaying the other players really matters.I was lucky to have a 2 – 1 chip lead on 2nd place going in to the FT and couldn’t really ask for a better start. The other players were all playing tight against me; trying to avoid me at all costs unless they had a monster hand. This is always a good thing as with nobody trying to contest pots with me I was effectively being given permission to constantly steal chips from the other players allowing me to extend my chip lead significantly… a lot of the pots i won on the FT could have gone to the other player had they tried to play back at me. What do you plan to do with the prize money?I plan to use a lot of the prize money to work my way into a number of large live events. I will be playing the Irish Winter Festival tournament in October and hope that this will be the first of many over the next couple of years. It has been an ambition of mine to expand in to the live poker scene for quite some time now and huge prizes are ready for the taking.I will also re-invest a lot of the money on the Celeb Poker cash/tournament tables in order to continue progressing up through the stakes striving to improve by playing better players and to earn bigger pay days. Advice to other players? You might have to play countless tournaments in order to take a big finish or it could happen on your first one. The important thing is to not let this high level variance affect your play, if you’re not happy with your results so far it does not necessarily mean you’re a bad player as luck is certainly a large factor in poker. Keep a clear head, always be trying to improve your game (there are many resources out there for an aspiring poker player to learn from), put in the hands and the results will follow.

Strategy with Kristy: Aaron Jones Part One
April 05 2012, Kristy Arnett Related Articles Strategy with Kristy: Reid Young Discusses Showdown Value Strategy with Kristy: Tax Time Strategy with Kristy: Quinn Sivage Discusses Min-Raising Button Share It Tags Aaron Jones, PokerNews Podcast, Poker Strategy, Online Poker, Black Friday Print Aaron Jones is one of the most respected high-stakes cash-games players in the industry. He plays under the moniker “aejones” and consistently beats $25/$50 no-limit hold’em and higher. A video instructor for LeggoPoker, Jones is more than proficient at discussing poker concepts and answering tough strategy questions. In the first of this two-part interview for the Strategy with Kristy podcast, Jones takes on poker theory questions sent in by listeners. Here is a snippet from the interview: What is an underrated or unused stat in HEM that you use a lot or think is important? For me, I think the biggest stat is “Won when saw flop.” I think a lot of people would agree with me. I don’t think this is something revolutionary, but if you combine the “Won when saw flop” stat with the VPIP stat, you can sort of tell how hard someone is trying to win pots. For instance, in six-max, if someone’s number is near or above 50, it’s particularly high, especially if they’re playing like 25 percent of hands. Whereas, if they are only play like 20 percent of hands, and their number is in the low 40s or below 40, that guy is basically just trying to flop three-of-a-kind. [Laughs] That’s an exaggeration but it’s someone who’s playing quite a bit tighter. It’s important because if you get check-raised on the turn by that player, you might want to just fold an overpair. Whereas, if someone’s number is high, over 50 or whatever, look for him to put in multiple barrels, look for him to be more aggressive postflop when he puts money in preflop. Basically, the guy is just trying to win pots more. That’s probably the stat I default to if I want to decide if a guy is bluffing or not. Whenever someone talks about online poker, six-max, or even using HUDs, it makes me miss online poker so much. Yeah, the funny thing is that before Black Friday, I wasn’t super ambitious when it came to playing poker. But man, once they took it away from me, it was just terrible that I couldn’t just fire it up. It’s similar to when a girl likes you, you don’t really care, but when she doesn’t like you, you start liking her. Exactly. I was actually thinking of making that reference myself, but I thought I’d just wind up making a bad analogy. I agree with you. Matt Glantz Pessimistic About Sale of FTP Poker pro Matt Glantz’s stance on the situation at Full Tilt Poker has gone through a complete transformation in recent months. The high-stakes regular was one of the few players to defend Full Tilt Poker after Black Friday, but it seems that Glantz has officially lost his patience with the company. In a recent blog post, Whispers From Full Tilt, Glantz said that he’s reached out to a number of Full Tilt Poker shareholders, most of whom said they’ve remained silent about the issue so as to not catch blame for interfering with the sale of the site. Glantz says he believes that the pending deal between Full Tilt Poker and Groupe Bernard Tapie is looking bleak, especially now that Tapie has publicly revealed the list of players who allegedly owe money to Full Tilt Poker. “Unfortunately I feel based on their recent actions, I believe it is inevitable that Tapie will be backing out,” Glantz wrote. “It looks to me that for whatever reasons they have no real interest in acquiring FTP … The truth is that some if not most of the players Tapie has outed do not have the money to pay the company back and it is not going to happen. One can assume that Tapie is only doing this to save face, so when they officially back out of the deal they will have public names to blame.” To read the full blog, check out mattglantzpoker.com. Gregory Ronaldson Wins Opening Event at 2012 WSOP Africa The 2nd Annual World Series of Poker Africa is under way at the Emerald Casino in Johannesburg. The first of six champions on the 2012 schedule was crowned on Friday when Gregory Ronaldson won the opening event, a $350 no-limit hold’em event which saw 324 players compete for a prize pool of $92,200. After three days of play, Ronaldson, a 28-year-old poker pro from Johannesburg, found himself heads-up against Jaco van Tonder for the title. On the final hand, Ronaldson’s pocket eights held up against van Tonder’s , and Ronaldson collected nearly $23,000 for his efforts. It was the second title for Ronaldson in a month. He took down the $5,000 Heads-Up Championship at the 2012 Aussie Millions for $82,358 on Jan. 23. Vanessa Selbst Wins Star-studded $5,000 LAPC Event The $10,000 Main Event at the Los Angeles Poker Classic kicked off on Friday, but a prelim event was getting all the attention at the Commerce Casino late Thursday night. A stacked field in the $5,000 no-limit hold’em event played down to a winner, and Team PokerStars Pros Vanessa Selbst and Jonathan Duhamel were the last two standing from a field of 98. After notables like Josh Brikis, Stephen Chidwick, Faraz Jaka, Matt Stout and McLean Karr exited the final table, Selbst and Duhamel decided to cut a deal. Galfond Selling Apartment Phil Galfond moved to Vancouver last year following the DOJ’s crackdown on online poker, so he didn’t see the need to hang onto his multimillion dollar grinding pad in New York City. Galfond’s apartment comes with two bedrooms, four baths, elevator entry, and a helical steel slide connecting the two floors. Yes, that’s right a slide. Everleaf Confirms U.S. Authorities Seized Funds Nearly two weeks after making a hasty exit from the U.S. market, Everleaf Gaming broke its silence with a statement to the media on Thursday. The company confirmed that player funds had been seized by U.S. authorities but reassured all affected players that all the funds will be refunded in full. Everleaf players residing in the U.S. were prohibited from playing on any of the network’s 100-plus skins beginning on Feb. 9, 2012. Everleaf did not release an explanation for the stoppage, but a representative from Minted Poker revealed that the network received a cease and desist order from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and faced legal action if it continues to facilitate its services in the U.S. Everleaf said in the statement that the seizure occurred in the U.S. and only affects U.S. players, and that business in other markets will continue to run as usual. Everleaf’s statement can be found right here at PokerNews.com. I no longer have any association with the company or any associated businesses/products.” Torelli wrote a similar entry, thanking the site and wishing the company “continued success in the future.” Victory Poker closed its poker room last June. The site moved its international poker player base to the Cake Poker Network after Black Friday, and CEO Dan Fleyshman had plans to run an affiliate site providing “news, strategy, videos, and reviews.

Relatively Unknown Player Wins WSOP Circuit in Oklahoma
The Choctaw Casino Resort in Durant, Oklahoma, has seen some top poker players in action during the 2011-2012 World Series of Poker Circuit. Recently, however, when the last card was dealt, the winner was not one of the well known poker players, but rather an out of work poker player. Abraham Araya, the 44-year-old who became a new poker champion, is currently unemployed, after having been laid off from his job as an airline flight mechanic. His company filed bankruptcy when the economy took a dive, and he was laid off, as were others. He used to work on aircrafts that carried the NBA teams. In the same venue, at Choctaw, Araya had won the T.J. Cloutier Poker Challenge. He took home $83,659 in October 2011 when he won this title. He kept going with poker and won $270,380 in his recent victory at the WSOP Circuit Main Event. Araya noted how this amount of money is equivalent to what he could have earned as an aircraft mechanic over about 4 or 5 years. When asked about his victory soon after he won the final poker hand of the game, he said: Right now I cant believe it. It didnt sink in yet. I cant tell you how amazing this feeling is. Araya has been living in the United States for 21 years. He was born in East Africa, and left there to escape war. He has a wife and three children living with him in America. He plans to take his children on a trip to see their grandparents, who are still living in East Africa. He also has a romantic notion, wanting to take his wife for a second honeymoon for their 10th wedding anniversary. Araya had the following to say: Last night I kind of felt I was going to win because I had the chip lead, but when I eliminated (Derek Browning in sixth) I knew I was going to win.
